Working in 'the cloud'

Nowadays, you can't avoid working in the 'cloud'. Whether it's about storing files or creating a photo book. There is almost always a cloud service available for all actions. Using these internet services offers many advantages, but the disadvantages should also be carefully considered.

Cloudsv1

The term 'cloud' often comes up, but it might sound a bit vague. However, it's not very complicated. It stands for working and storing via the internet. The information is therefore not on the computer, but online. Think of files, but also programs. An internet connection is needed to access them. Various applications are possible in the cloud. The most used is file storage. Files can not only be stored on the computer or a USB stick but also online. This is called storing in the cloud. In this article, we further focus on online storage.

What do I need?

Various companies offer the possibility to store in the cloud. Such a company provides space in a so-called data center to store data, possibly for a fee. To work in the cloud, users need an account with a password at such a cloud service. The services often offer a limited amount of free storage. Those who store many videos and photos need to switch to paid space. People also need an internet connection to use the cloud.

Advantages of the cloud

There are several advantages to storing in the cloud:

In case of fire or burglary, the files are safe because they are stored offsite.

The files can be accessed from any device with internet access.

Multiple devices can be synchronized with each other.

Online storage can be used as an (automatic) backup option.

Below we further discuss online backup and synchronization.

Online backup

On devices like the computer, smartphone, and tablet, there are many valuable files. It is advisable to make a backup to prevent these files from being lost. A backup is nothing more and nothing less than a copy of the information in another location. That location can be an external hard drive or USB stick, but it can also be online. With an online backup of files, you run no risk of loss, theft, or damage to the external hard drive, for example.

Synchronization

People can also synchronize the files stored in the cloud. Simply put, the latest version of a file is then available on multiple devices. A photo is then on the smartphone, but also, for example, on the computer. Very handy for people who have more than one digital device.

Disadvantages of the cloud

Some people are afraid that files are not safe in the cloud or that others will gain access to the data. In general, this is not the case. Of course, it is wise to choose a strong password and keep login details secure.

The following points of the cloud can be perceived as disadvantages:

The free storage space is limited, and more storage space can be rented for a fee.

An internet connection is needed to access, update, and/or synchronize the files.

Most cloud services work with a special folder on the computer. Everything in there is stored. This means that everything you want to secure must be moved to that folder.

With some services, there is a risk of ransomware.

Cloud storage services

Various companies offer the possibility to store files online. The most well-known cloud services are iCloud, OneDrive, Google, and Dropbox. Which cloud service suits you best depends on your device(s) and preferences. It is, of course, possible to use multiple services (for different applications or devices).
